Al Torretto

Poway High School proudly honors Alan Torretto for more than four decades of extraordinary service as an educator, coach, mentor, and role model.

Torretto began his coaching career at Morse High School in 1972 before joining Poway High School in 1973. For 45 years, he inspired generations of students through his passion for teaching and his commitment to excellence.

As a biology teacher, affectionately known as the "Biology Answer-Man," Torretto made science come alive. His creative, hands-on approach, including bringing live snakes and other animals to campus, sparked curiosity and made learning unforgettable. His dedication earned him numerous honors, including Poway High School Teacher of the Year, the Crystal Apple Award, and the UCSD Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Torretto also made an extraordinary impact on Poway wrestling. For more than 35 years, he worked alongside legendary coach Wayne Branstetter as the program captured more than 30 section championships and three state championships. His junior varsity teams won 30 league and 15 county championships, while his freshman teams earned 30 league and 13 county championships.

His coaching excellence was recognized with the California Assistant Coach of the Year Award, the California Wrestling Hall of Fame Lifetime Service Award, and two CIF Awards for Outstanding Coaching Achievement.

Retiring in 2017, Torretto left a legacy measured not only in championships, but in the countless young people he encouraged, challenged, and inspired.
