Wayne Branstetter

In grateful recognition of Wayne Branstetter's extraordinary achievements, exceptional dedication, and lasting contributions to wrestling and generations of student-athletes.

After beginning his coaching career at Channel Islands High School, Wayne took the helm of Poway High School wrestling, where he coached the Titans for 40 years, building one of California's most successful high school wrestling programs.

His competitive accomplishments are extraordinary: a 471-6-2 dual meet record, 37 CIF championships, 35 Masters championships, 43 league titles, four California state team championships, and 28 state tournament Top Five finishes. Under his leadership, Poway produced 17 individual state champions, 36 state finalists, and 136 state medalists.

His excellence earned national recognition, including National Coach of the Year honors in 1998, 2001, and 2005, along with induction into multiple halls of fame.

Yet Wayne has always measured success by more than championships. His greatest pride is helping young men develop discipline, perseverance, accountability, leadership, and character, preparing them to become productive members of society.

For four decades, he built more than a championship wrestling program. He built a culture of excellence, camaraderie, pride, and character that continues to define Poway wrestling.

Poway High School proudly honors Wayne Branstetter for a lifetime of extraordinary coaching and an enduring legacy that transcends wins and losses.
