Bob Champion

In grateful recognition of Bob Champion’s life devoted to service, leadership, education, and the young people of Poway High School.

A 1962 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Coach Bob Champion served as a highly decorated Navy officer before beginning his 34 year career at Poway High in 1972. As a teacher and coach, he inspired generations of students through oceanography, science, physics, and athletics.

He founded Poway High's soccer program and closed his coaching career with 483 victories and three CIF championships. Through the Poway High Varsity Club, he instilled in student athletes the enduring values of leadership, character, purpose, and service. His passion for the ocean and environmental education led him to found C.A.R.E.D., giving hundreds of students the opportunity to study coastal environments firsthand.

A steadfast champion of teamwork and unity, he helped strengthen the bonds among students, programs, and the greater Poway High community. In 2008, he was inducted as a charter member of the San Diego County High School Coaching Legends. He passed away in 2024. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the community he helped build.
